David Harding is in a lively mood. Just 10 minutes into our interview in London’s King’s Cross the billionaire founder of Winton Group, one of the world’s largest hedge fund companies, has already used the F word twice.

The fault is probably mine. Before the referendum vote in 2016 the Cambridge-educated physicist donated £3.5m to the Stronger in Europe Campaign to try and avert the UK’s imminent departure from the European Union. I ask if it was money well spent.
