It is with a distinct sense of pride that Anne Boden describes herself as one of the few chief executives in banking to have “actually stood behind a counter and paid out money” while at Lloyds Bank during the early 1980s.

She calls the Bank of England’s same-day payments system, which she helped to develop a few years later into her stint at Lloyds, “her baby”.
