Investors have gone fishing in Europe’s market for initial public offerings this year. But not all have landed a prize catch.

In the biggest year for IPOs since 2007, about a quarter of those that raised $500 million or more have underperformed their local market. Adam Gishen, a partner at advisory firm Ondra Partners, said: "It is not great by any stretch, and somewhat of a lottery for investors."
