A bevy of banks are employing an old-school technique to win additional business in the UK, Europe’s largest market for investment banking fees.

The banks are focusing on landing roles as corporate brokers, a listed firm's eyes and ears in the market, a job that generates nominal income but can be a foot in the door when firms want to do acquisitions or issue new shares - leading to much more substantial fees.
