Barclays Capital weathers tricky half year with strong profits

Barclays Capital, the investment banking arm of Barclays, reported a healthy rise in operating profit as the group's overall results were hit by acquisition costs and bad loan provisions.

Barclays Capital's operating profit rose 22% to £377m in the first six months of the year, compared to a small decline for the group as a whole, which reported profits of £1.3bn against £1.32bn a year ago.
