Blank-cheque companies make a comeback in Europe

European buyout firms, already facing fierce competition from cash-rich corporates and deep-pocketed sovereign wealth funds, have another rival for deals: blank-cheque companies.

So-called special-purpose acquisition companies, which raise money to buy companies by listing shares on a stock exchange, gathered a record $14.8bn in Europe last year, Dealogic data shows.
