Break fees widespread in UK deals

Nearly 80% of offers for large UK-listed companies contain break fees, a structure that forces the target to pay the original bidder a lump sum if it is bought by a third party, according to analysis by Financial News.

This figure is up dramatically on previous years and shows that break fees, which were only permitted by the Takeover Panel, the UK regulator, in 1998, have been adopted wholesale.
