Breaking up big banks could make future crises worse

The United Kingdom has drawn a new line in the sand between “us and them”. And it has nothing to do with the eurozone or budget deficits.

Instead, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat government has set out plans for the creation of a commission to consider the arguments for breaking up big banks into a collection of smaller, less systemically important institutions. But there are reasons to believe such a plan could actually make future crises worse.
