Thousands gathered for the funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth

A reveille, a rendition of the national anthem and a lament played by the queen's piper will bring the state funeral to an end at approximately noon

At just after 6 am, throngs of people were making their way from subway exits toward Green Park, Parliament Square and the Mall, where the queen's casket will be taken in procession

LONDON — Britain said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, the country's longest-serving monarch, during a historic funeral watched by millions across the globe, that spoke to her deep Christian faith and a life of service to the British people.

The state funeral and solemn military procession Monday closed the chapter on the second Elizabethan age, a reign that lasted 70 years and saw an era of radical change for Britain as its empire was dismantled and its global standing shrunk. The queen, however, remained a hugely popular head of state who gave people both in Britain and abroad a valued sense of continuity and proved a powerful symbol of the country's identity.
