Buyout firms play the name game

Whether it is independent recognition or the desire to gain distance from poor publicity, private equity firms are increasingly rebranding

The names of about a third of the world’s 250 best-known private equity firms start with the letters A, B or C. Coincidence? Or, perhaps, a desire to appear at the top of the list?

The tactic has not always worked. Three years ago a poll by penews.com, sister publication to Financial News, found readers rated traditional names such as Kohlberg Kravis Roberts [KKR] as the best.
