Calpers splashes first $500m on commodities

The $220bn (€171.5bn) California Public Employees' Retirement System, which has been diversifying its investment strategy, has made a $500m maiden allocation to commodities just a week after committing the same amount to a venture capital fund.

The fund will allocate the money to futures instruments linked to the prices of energy, metals and agricultural indexes. The move is subject to approval from Calpers' investment committee.
