The C$162bn Canada Pension Plan, one of the largest schemes in the world, generated above-average returns of 6.6% in the year to March, helped by its active investment stance and a willingness to diversify assets.

Fund levels were boosted by returns of 16.3% from inflation-linked bonds, 14.4% from illiquid bonds, 13% from real estate and 12.8% from infrastructure.
