Distressed debt buyers target Viatel despite downgrade

Distressed debt buyers have been descending on bonds of Viatel, the US telecom group, despite Standard & Poor's cutting its debt rating by four notches.

The debt rating agency cut Viatel's ratings from B- to CC, which is just two rating notches above the default category. The agency also said that there is a chance that it will downgrade the company again, adding that there is a risk the company could default on its debt.
