The inquiry into the collapse of failed outsourcer Carillion has given MPs the chance to deliver a series of solid, crowd-pleasing kicks to the "Big Four" audit firms.

Frank Field, the joint-chairman of the Carillion probe, returned to his favourite theme of auditors as a cosy cartel this week, when administrators PwC appeared before the MPs' inquisition.
