The Chicago Mercantile Exchange has moved nearer to closing its open outcry trading pits after reporting a record 61% jump in second quarter earnings driven by electronic trading.

Trading on the exchange's Globex platform accounted for 52% of volume during the quarter, compared with just 40% in the same quarter last year.
