EU plans tougher rules to combat fraud

The European Commission has proposed tough new rules on disclosure of company information and the responsibilities of directors in a renewed effort to stamp out fraud and abuse.

Frits Bolkestein, the outgoing internal market commissioner, said the rules were necessary to reduce malpractice and restore market confidence.
