A couple of years before the financial crisis, the head of investment banking at one of the Wall Street giants gave me a prediction. In 10 years’ time, his bank could be making as much money in Europe as it did in the US.

I seem to remember he made a few other duff forecasts too. But this one really was a lulu. It could hardly have proved more wrong.
