Samir Assaf, chief executive of global banking and markets, HSBC

The quiet-spoken Assaf took the reins at HSBC’s giant global banking and markets unit in January, following the promotion of his former boss Stuart Gulliver to the role of group chief executive. He has spent the previous three years running the global markets business. The challenge for the Lebanese-born banker will be to emulate Gulliver’s success in the GBM division, which last year delivered more than half of the group’s pre-tax profits. In the coming year, he aims to improve client coverage with selective senior hiring, boost its equities business in high-growth markets, and increase efficiencies through better systems and platforms – without getting seduced by over-expansion in European or US investment banking.
