The UK's financial institutions were the only industry to spend more money on acquisitions than the country's elite football teams over the summer months.

Big-spending clubs in the Premier League spent a record £1.4bn on players between June 9 and August 31 — the period during which football clubs in the UK can buy and sell their stars — according to data from Thomson Reuters.
