London-based venture capital investor Anya Navidski was pregnant and hunting for a modern breast pump. Nothing was quite right, until she heard about a US-based start-up with a great product. The problem was the company’s female founder was struggling to get financing, and the pump was not available in the UK.

For Navidski, the personal tale highlighted a broader pattern that was all too familiar.
