Gold exchange-traded funds sank to multi-year lows, caught in a swift downdraft after the Federal Reserve's upbeat stance on the economy sapped appeal for the precious metal's haven status.

The Fed offered a more upbeat view of the US economy, and chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank could begin pulling back its $85bn-per-month bond-buying program later this year.
