Stuart Gulliver's efforts to steer HSBC through the biggest restructuring in its history helped secure a 25% hike in his 2017 bonus, pushing his total pay during his tenure as chief executive beyond the £50m mark.

The bank's chief executive earned £6.1m in 2017, up from £5.7m the previous year, according to the bank's annual report, which was published today alongside its results for the year.
