Last Friday, Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn hosted China’s finance minister, Lou Jiwei, in a private meeting in midtown Manhattan. On Tuesday, Cohn jetted to San Francisco to watch his friend and client Elon Musk unveil a new electric sport-utility vehicle for Tesla Motors.

Cohn has come a long way.
