Knight Capital swings to loss on August glitch

The second-largest broker in the US equity markets suffered a steep third-quarter loss after a high-profile algo trading error in August

Knight Capital Group on Wednesday reported a $389.9m third-quarter loss as the US trading firm boosted the final cost of a computer-trading glitch in August above its initial estimate.

The August 1 error roiled trading in nearly 150 stocks and cost Knight $461.1m, almost pushing the major facilitator of retail investor trading into bankruptcy before a group of financial firms sealed a last-minute rescue.
