Merrill edges away from criminal proceedings

Merrill Lynch has moved a step closer to avoiding a criminal charges in the New York State investigation into the bank's equity research.

Merrill Lynch executives were due to appear in court on May 9 to answer accusations that the firm published overly-favourable research reports on companies to help win investment banking business from them. The hearing would have taken Merrill, and former internet analyst Henry Blodget, one step nearer to facing criminal charges.
