Merrill Lynch fundraising costs exceed $5bn

Merrill Lynch has spent close to a quarter of the nearly $20bn (€12.7bn) raised in the past seven months to secure its capital base on gathering the money, in a sign of the harsh terms being imposed on the US bank.

Merrill Lynch is paying out around $5.2bn in compensation and interest payments in order to raise up to $20.8bn of capital.
