Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM) is spinning off its private equity arm, as revealed by Financial News on July 3, giving Mercury Private Equity, Merrill's buy-out specialist, a degree of autonomy.

Despite Mercury Private Equity's move outside the Merrill Lynch Investment Managers group, Merrill claims to be broadening its private equity strategy.
