MFS Investments, the US fund manager, is close to agreeing a $350m (€279m) settlement, including a cut in fees, with the country's state and federal regulators over charges of trading abuses in its mutual funds.

MFS is understood to be ready to pay around $225m in penalties on top of what amounts to a further $125m by cutting its management fees over the next five years, according to the Wall Street Journal.
