Monti calls for extra M&A powers

European corporates and their advisers face the prospect of having a lot of extra work to do when embarking on mergers and acquisitions if Mario Monti, the EU competition commissioner, succeeds in gaining more power to intervene in deals.

Monti is understood to want to expand his remit to get involved in smaller deals. However, the extent of Monti's plans is still unclear and the industry awaits more concrete guidelines.
