Online travel company buys rival

An online US travel company backed by private equity house The Blackstone Group has made its first deal since its own leveraged buyout with the acquisition of a rival for $1.4bn (€1.05bn).

Travelport owns online travel services Cheaptickets.com and Orbitz.com and runs the ticketing systems for United Airlines. It has agreed to buy Worldspan, which runs the ticketing systems for Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, for $1.4bn.
