President Obama this week nominated Jack Lew, a veteran of the Clinton administration and a trusted adviser, as his latest US Treasury Secretary. The appointment comes amidst fierce debate in the US Congress between Democrats and Republicans over whether to raise the US debt ceiling, which currently stands at $16.394 trillion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Regarded as a partisan Democrat, the Citigroup veteran has experience of negotiating with Republican adversaries during budget battles stretching back to the Clinton years.  Before joining the Obama administration in 2009, Lew was chief operating officer of Citi Global Wealth Management and then Citi Alternative Investments from 2008.
