Putnam extols art of programme trading

Putnam Investments has identified programme trading as a means of saving on dealing costs. Its volume of such trades has increased five-fold in the past three years since the appointment of Richard Leibovitch as global head of trading.

Key to programme trading is the construction of baskets of stocks for trade. Computer models can be used to build them, but Leibovitch warns against excessive reliance on them.
