The UK bank’s debt capital markets unit is focusing on long-term relationships and developing ‘multi-sport’ bankers

Relationship banking, with its eye on the longer term, used to be as much a City tradition as pinstripe suits but it went out of fashion when banks focused on the deal-by-deal chase of investment banking.

Now, according to executives at Royal Bank of Scotland, capital constraints and a tougher marketplace are bringing it back. To prepare, the bank is moving away from deal-driven relationships, and focusing on showcasing intellectual, rather than financial, capital.
