After its first annual profit in a decade last year, the bottom line trebles during the first quarter at taxpayer-owned bank

Royal Bank of Scotland, which last year posted its first annual profit since a government bail out a decade ago, has reported a strong start to 2018 with a sharp jump in its bottom line.

The bank said attributable profits during the first three months of this year stood at £792m, more than treble the £259m it reported during the same period in 2017.
