Regulator warns mutual fund firms of "painful" penalties

Eliot Spitzer, New York state attorney general has warned US mutual funds involved in fraud that they will have to pay out 'painful' levels of compensation to investors.

Appearing before a US senate subcommittee hearing into trading abuses a mutual funds, Spitzer was openly aggressive in describing the levels of penalties asset management firms will have to pay. He said: "The number will be big. It will impose pain - and it should."
