We’re almost a decade into the revolution.

Betterment unveiled its automated investing service in 2010. Within a few years, “robo-advisers” were threatening to upend financial services the way that Amazon.com undid retail. Sophisticated algorithms, the promise went, could provide customised portfolios to the masses, at a quarter of the price charged by human advisers.
