Sales of safes and rentals of bank deposit boxes have surged, as nervous investors shelter their gold bullion and bank notes from market volatility and larceny.

Sales have trebled over the past year at Home Safes. David Harvey, sales director at the fi rm, says retired couples and young professionals flocked to his showroom in September as they lost confidence in banks.
