Sainsbury confirms bid defence talks with Morgan Stanley

FSA 'selective briefing' probe continues

J Sainsbury, the troubled UK supermarket group, confirmed today that it has held talks with Morgan Stanley over preparing defences against a potential hostile takeover.

Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive, said that despite the talks with Morgan Stanley, which won plaudits for its work defending rival retailer Marks & Spencer, he had not formally hired the investment bank as an adviser.
