Two bidders are now battling for control of Warner Chilcott, the Northern Irish pharmaceuticals firm. A second approach was made to the group hours after it opened its books to the first.

The identity of the new bidder was not immediately clear, although banking sources suggested that that it includes Bain Capital, another US buy-out house and Credit Suisse First Boston.
