The Village

UK law firm Bird & Bird has taken umbrage at its new neighbour. Rather than a gym or car park in the basement, lawyers will be able to enjoy the delights of a burlesque club when they're done billing clients.

Performers at the Volupté club will include Stella Starr, Goodtime Mama Jojo and Kuki La-Belle, who would doubtless please eyes tired from late-night due diligence sessions. When club owner Karen Farini delivered a presentation to the law firm, she described it as a "1930s cocktail and cabaret bar with a restaurant, jazz, old movies and some burlesque". She stressed there would be no nudity – but her efforts were in vain: the firm is opposing her licensing application. Bird & Bird claims the loss of its local pub is its main grievance, though a spokesman admitted they "probably wouldn't have the same complaint" if it was a gym that was opening instead.
