Townsend cleared of insider dealing

John Townsend, the former vice-chairman of UK broker Hoare Govett, has been cleared of telling a close friend to buy one million shares in what the prosecution alleged was a ``flagrant' example of insider dealing.

Townsend was accused of tipping off a friend to buy shares in WT Foods because he had privileged information on the impending takeover of a rival and knew the share price would rocket when the deal was announced.
