UBS predicts ‘serious resurgence’ of European banking M&A

Greater clarity on capital requirement rules for European banks and costs inflicted by bad loan books could spark a "serious resurgence" of takeover activity in the sector this year, according to analysts at UBS.

A research note, published today, looked at banking as a complete sector, including retail and wholesale institutions, and found most major European countries had several hundred banks — with Germany’s 1,643 leading the pack.
