UK banks lend almost £15bn to struggling firms amid ailing economy

The statistics come as the UK economy contracts by a record 5.8% in March

The government’s schemes for companies hit by the Covid-19 pandemic have provided almost £15bn in loans to over 304,000 businesses.

The lending figures come as the Office for National Statistics published figures on 13 May showing the UK economy shrank a record 5.8% in March, with companies now navigating the tentative lifting of certain restrictions imposed during lockdown.
