Vodafone and Mannesmann in late-night talks

Vodafone AirTouch and Mannesmann executives negotiated until the early hours today amid signs that the takeover battle that has raged between Europe's two biggest wireless telecommunications companies could be moving closer to an agreement, reports the Financial Times.

However, the talks in Dusseldorf between Chris Gent and Klaus Esser failed to yield breakthrough and the discussions were suspended at around 1am.
