The chief executive of Barclays has penned a letter to colleagues after his attempts to uncloak the identity of a whistleblower at the bank were revealed today.

Jes Staley said he became "too personally involved" when trying to protect a colleague whom he said had been the subject of an "unfair personal attack" sent via anonymous letters to the board.
