William O'Brien, chief executive of Direct Edge, addresses criticism of high-frequency traders and the structure of the US equity markets as he approaches his five-year anniversary of joining the fledgling exchange from Nasdaq in July 2007.

Direct Edge became a fully regulated exchange in July 2010 after approval from the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
