A top London hedge fund — run by a champion of mathematical analysis — is on a mission to discover the true size of the industry, which it suspects could be much smaller than people think.

Executives at Winton Group, the $30bn hedge fund firm run by David Harding, have launched a review into the collective assets managed by the world’s hedge funds in a move that could challenge widely-used industry figures.
